Fantasy - New Pictures by Zaza Tuschmalischvili
The ingenious brilliant Dali whose talent was in the beginning vigorously disputed in the art world, ascertained that his paintings do not have to be explained, but that is would suffice to look at them through the eyes of children or the unspoilt eyes of the fishermen of his village.
Just like this one should look at Zaza Tuschmalischvili´s pictures. No knowledge of art history is required. One does not have to know a lot about the background, not even about the education of this painter, who was born 40 years ago in Georgia and has been living in Berlin for the last 10 years. All his oeuvres, as manifold as they are in their motives, their technique and arrangement speak directly to our senses. Just as with Dali they fascinate us and entice us into the land of fantasy and dream, into regions full of memories, longings and even angst.
Zaza Tuschmalischvili´s art cannot be categorized as surrealistic, neither expressionistic, cubistic or naïve. His art has elements of all of these in a nearly unfathomable diversity which lends it uniqueness. Seemingly his reservoir of ideas is inexhaustible but unified by recurring symbols, like the fish, the angel or the Taurus.
Zaza Tuschmalischvili´s pictures emanate a sentiment of warmth, light and brightness. And even in pictures in which the cool blue colour dominates windows open up to the light of a sunny day. It is the figuratively perceived colour spots in his cubistic-like collages which let you think of the lightness and warmth of Mediterranean countries to whose culture his Georgia home country belongs.
All of his pictures including the latest show an almost limitless desire to shape. His joy in the artistic experiment does not least show in his colour collages in which he achieves unexpected effects through layers on layers of paint. In his "fantasy" Z. Tuschmalischvili creates illusions through which the observer's own imagination will be stimulated. Possibly the concept of "fantasy " is the most fitting one for the extraordinary talent of a painter who will be understood by all.
